The holidays have a way of sneaking up on us. One minute the holidays feel far away, and the next you’re hosting a holiday dinner — with Christmas right behind it. The good news is you don’t need a big overhaul. A few small resets can make your home feel calmer and more welcoming.
And here’s the secret: none of these are last-minute jobs. Every one of them is easier and cheaper done now, a few weeks ahead, than in the scramble right before guests arrive. Do them now, and December-you says thank you.

1. Start with the Entryway
This is where guests land first, and where coats, bags, and shoes pile up. Start by taking everything out of the coat closet or off the hooks — yes, everything. Put back only the coats your family actually wears each week. Anything still in good shape can go into a donation bag.
Give the everyday shoes a home, too — one pair per person by the door, the rest to the closets they belong in. This woven entryway storage basket with a metal frame is a great fit for the job — it corrals the shoe pile and still looks attractive by the door. Add a small spot for keys and mail so they stop landing on every flat surface. The whole house feels different the second you walk in.
2. Clear a Little Room in the Kitchen
You don’t need to organize the whole kitchen right now — just get it ready for the biggest cooking days of the year. Take the platters and serving dishes you’ll actually use for the holidays and put them on a shelf you can reach easily. The rest can be tucked away somewhere out of the way — or let go of, if you’re ready. Then take stock of the big things before you’re standing in a store the day before the holiday dinner: Do you have a roasting pan? Enough pie plates? Serving spoons? Chairs for everyone at the table? Finding a gap now is a minor errand. Finding it that week is a crisis.
While you’re at it, check the basics you’ll burn through: foil, parchment, trash bags, storage containers with lids that actually match. Write down what you’re missing and buy it on your next regular shopping trip, while the shelves are stocked and nothing is an emergency. That’s it — the kitchen is ready.
3. Set Up a Guest-Ready Spot
You don’t need overnight guests for this one. Put fresh towels in the bathroom your guests will use, and clear one surface — the guest bed or a dresser top — so there’s somewhere for a purse or a bag to land besides the floor. If you do have a guest room, it’s probably become the house’s drop zone — that’s normal, and now is the kindest time to clear it, while you can move things a little at a time instead of in one panicked armload the night before.
Wash the guest towels and bedding now and put them right back on the bed and in the bathroom, so they’re done and waiting. Clear one drawer or a section of closet so a guest isn’t living out of a suitcase on the floor. A small basket on the nightstand — tissues, a phone charger, the Wi-Fi password on a little card — makes people feel genuinely looked after.
4. Make a Gift Wrapping Station
Before you buy a single roll of paper, gather up the wrapping supplies you already have — wherever they’re tucked away. Whatever you’ve got, even if it’s not much — a roll of paper, tape, scissors, tags, ribbon, gift bags — put it all in one bin. Now you can see what you have, and what, if anything, you still need.
Set the bin wherever you’ll wrap, and here’s the part that changes everything: wrap gifts as they arrive, a few at a time, instead of saving them all for one marathon night. Five calm minutes now beats three frantic hours later, every single time.
5. Make Room for What’s Coming In
New gifts are on the way, so let something go first. Choose one drawer, shelf, or closet, and if there’s anything you’re ready to let go of, this is a good time for it.
For kids, try one-in, one-out before the new toys land: pick a few outgrown toys together now, while it’s a calm conversation and not a Christmas-morning negotiation. And when the big day gets close, wipe down a shelf or two in the fridge so there’s space for leftovers.
You don’t have to do it all. Pick one reset this weekend and start there. A little space now means a lot more joy later.
